Crabbing Responsibly at Barnegat Bay (C.R.A.B.B.) Survey Report

A team of 11 students at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) developed and delivered a survey on recreational crabbing practices in the Barnegat Bay. Local crabbers were asked questions on crab size regulations, locations, and economic aspects of crabbing, in addition to modern day perceptions of crabbing and predictions for the future. Results were then analyzed according to gender, age, and municipality. Survey results suggest that while crabbing is economically and culturally important to the Barnegat Bay, many individuals do not know the recreational size regulations, and that more education and outreach is needed to keep crabbing sustainable.
