Jersey-Friendly Yards Resident Certification Program Goes Statewide

The Jersey-Friendly Yards Resident Certification Program has officially expanded its reach! Previously exclusive to residents of the Barnegat Bay watershed, the program is now open to homeowners and gardeners across the entire state of New Jersey. This exciting change, effective January 6, allows even more New Jersey residents to showcase their commitment to creating environmentally friendly, sustainable landscapes.

To participate, residents complete a checklist based on the program’s 8 Steps to a Jersey-Friendly Yard, which include actions like reducing lawn size, planting native species, and managing water runoff. If participants can check off at least 30 of the 40 items on the list and provide photos of their yard as verification, they can proudly earn their certification.

Since the statewide launch, the response has been overwhelming, with over 100 entries submitted and 85 certifications awarded. The community of Glen Ridge has shown particular enthusiasm, leading the charge with six certified entries.

This expansion represents an incredible opportunity to bring the benefits of Jersey-Friendly Yards—such as improved water quality, enhanced wildlife habitat, and reduced maintenance—beyond the Barnegat Bay watershed and into neighborhoods throughout New Jersey.
